Things to remember:

  • The school day is 8:50 until 3:20

  • Reading planners and reading books will be needed in school every day.

  • Children will visit the school library or take home sharing books.

  • Please bring a named water bottle every day.

  • PE kits should be left in school.  These will be sent home at the end of each half term.

Welcome back to a new school year!

 

Welcome to Year 3!

We are delighted to welcome you to Year 3! This is an exciting year as children move from Key Stage 1 into Key Stage 2. Year 3 brings new opportunities, greater independence, and lots of exciting learning experiences.

What to Expect in Year 3

As children enter Key Stage 2, they will be encouraged to become more independent learners.

Children will:

  • Build confidence in reading, writing and mathematics.
  • Develop their problem-solving and reasoning skills.
  • Work on longer pieces of writing across a range of genres.
  • Learn and practise the full range of times tables, particularly the 3, 4 and 8 times tables.
  • Take part in exciting topics that link different curriculum areas.
  • Develop teamwork, resilience and communication skills.
  • Participate in PE, music, art, computing and science investigations.

We aim to make learning engaging, challenging and enjoyable while ensuring every child feels supported and valued.

Understanding the National Curriculum in Year 3

 

The National Curriculum sets out the knowledge and skills children are expected to learn.

English

Children will learn to:

  • Read a wider variety of fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
  • Improve reading fluency and comprehension skills.
  • Use dictionaries to check meanings and spellings.
  • Write stories, reports, letters and instructions.
  • Use paragraphs to organise writing.
  • Develop their understanding of grammar, punctuation and spelling.

 

Mathematics

Children will focus on:

  • Place value of numbers up to at least 1,000.
  • Addition and subtraction using formal written methods.
  • Multiplication and division facts, including the 3, 4 and 8 times tables.
  • Fractions, including recognising and comparing simple fractions.
  • Measuring length, mass and capacity.
  • Telling the time and solving practical mathematical problems.

Science

Children will explore:

  • Animals, including humans.
  • Plants and how they grow.
  • Rocks and soils.
  • Light and shadows.
  • Forces and magnets.

 

Foundation Subjects

Children will also study:

  • History: learning about significant periods and events from the past including The Stone Age and Ancient Egypt.
  • Geography: understanding places, environments and maps including volcanoes and earthquakes.
  • Computing: developing digital literacy and programming skills including online safety and e mails.
  • Art and Design: exploring creativity through different media including using charcoal.
  • Design and Technology: designing, creating and evaluating products including bridges and making a sandwich.
  • Music: performing, composing and appreciating music.
  • Physical Education (PE): improving fitness, coordination and teamwork.
  • Religious Education (RE) and Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE): helping children understand themselves, others and the wider world.
