Phonics

Phonic Scheme

We use the 'Letters and Sounds' phonic scheme to support our phonic teaching.  All children in Reception, Year 1 and 2 receive phonic lessons in line with this scheme which supplements the requirements of the National Curriculum. Lessons are taught daily. The sessions are fun and interactive.

Children in Year 2 naturally progress from the phonic scheme to spelling lessons. For this we use a scheme called 'No-nonsense Spelling'. This scheme is used throughout school from Year 2 to 6. Lessons at year two use a similar format and style to those taught from the Letters and Sounds scheme. This ensures that children continue to revise and practise their phonic skills alongside learning new words for reading and spelling.

Copies of the 'Letters and Sounds' scheme and the 'No-Nonsense Spelling' scheme are available to look at in the Deputy Head's office. If you would like any further information about phonics at St Paul's please contact our Phonic Manager Ms Heathfield or speak to your child's class teacher. Further information about spelling can be given by our Writing Manager Miss Emmett.
